Reap What You Sow!
When an individual accepts the job of an officer of the law, he agrees to follow a certain set of rules of conduct. This is an expectation that comes along with his taxpayer-funded salary. Even if challenged by citizens or presented with perceived “disrespect,” an officer is still bound by the ethical requirements of that code of conduct.
If an officer can’t handle the variables involved with interacting with citizens, or is incapable/unwilling to do so in a professional manner, perhaps that officer should not be involved with that particular line of work. And if that officer is unwilling walk away from that position on their own, perhaps its time the taxpayers, take it upon themselves, to demand the officers release.
While I personally know quite a few good individuals within law enforcement, it only takes a few instances of reprehensible behavior to shatter public opinion. I think its time that the “bleed blue” idealism is either modified or eliminated. Quit standing by, ignoring, or even worse, protecting and condoning these “fellow officers” when they cross the line. Doing so simply make you an accessory and just as corrupt and guilty as those whom have performed the act themselves. That is that standard you hold the “public” to. Why should our standards for you be any less?
You adopting the idea that ALL individuals are potentially dangerous is no different then the public adopting the idea that ALL officers are potentially dangerous. You don’t like it when we do it to you, so quit doing it to us.
One thing is for sure, every instance of officers abusing their “authority” and endangering citizens, either verbally or physically, continues to eliminate whatever is left of the public’s confidence or law enforcement’s credibility.
Fear and Intimidation will NOT provide you respect.
You gain respect with integrity, and etiquette.
If you want respect, EARN IT!
