What Has REALLY Changed?
An interesting point.
I view a message that indicated that the reason driving is more dangerous now than it was before, is because there are more “distractions” now days.
So it got me thinking.
I’ve been driving my whole life and can’t come up with any driving “distractions” that exist today that didn’t exist 20 years ago.
Certain products have changed, some technologies are different, but the “distractions” have pretty much remained consistent.
To tell the truth I can only come up with one variable, and it ends up being one LESS distraction, and that is automatic transmissions.
But while I was pondering the subject, I had an epiphany.
The only REAL difference is the DRIVERS.
People have simply gotten a lot dumber in regards to how they handle the various “distractions”.
It isn’t an issue of the amount or type of distractions, its simply a matter of respect.
When I learned to drive I had an understanding and deep respect for the fact that I was sitting in 3000+ pounds of rolling potential death and destruction.
When I bought my first car, I had a deep and profound respect for the piece of machinery that I had worked, saved up, and paid for.
After learning to drive and buying the car, I actually took PRIDE in learning everything I could about how to master the operation of that piece of machinery.
It didn’t take long to understand that in order to master the operation of that piece of machinery, I had to know it functioned.
So I took PRIDE in discovering the basic details of how it worked.
Essentially, in the end, I became a better driver because I appreciated the act of driving, and respected the device that I was operating.
Now those days are gone.
People have no respect for anything.
They don’t respect each other. They don’t respect the devices they utilize. They don’t even respect themselves.
And why would they?
They deflect any responsibility for their actions, and are allowed, hell, even encouraged to do so.
They aren’t held accountable for their decisions.
Why bother, everyone else should be looking out for me right?
If I get in an accident it doesn’t matter, they can’t take what I don’t have, and maybe I’ll be able to get something out of it by suing them. After all they are supposed to have insurance.
Never mind the fact that someone could get killed, I mean that’s what seat belts and air bags are for right?
So screw it. I’ll just bury my head in the mesmerizing glimmer of that flicking screen, and throw caution to the wind.
Besides, I don’t have the attention span required to actually pay attention. Wouldn’t make any difference anyway, these days, things practically run themselves.
And so is the current state of our society.
Sad part is, this is an epidemic in ALL aspects of life, not just driving.
Modern individuals have lost connection to the world around them.
The distractions haven’t really changed.
The only difference is, now days, people just don’t care.
