Well I would say you could be right, but I know that there are some that still appreciate the idea of these virtues. I admit, it is appallingly apparent that the number of those that do respect these ideals has dramatically diminished. However, there are still a few left among us that have held true to these and a few other vanishing ideals. Such as Honor, Pride, Dignity, Loyalty … I could go on buy I think you get the idea.
So what has happened? I only wish I knew.
There are still those of use that remember, there is a line between standing up for our opinion, and the flagrant disrespect of stomping on theirs. We still remember that when we are guests in another persons home we should conduct ourselves in a manner to respect the rules of THEIR home even if we ourselves would not apply the same rules in our own. The fundamental ideal that when handling another persons property, we should understand and respect the manner in which THEY request it be utilized. The belief that trust is something that you must earn, and are irresponsibly pompous to demand. The awareness that trust can only be gained through countless examples of respect. And the resolve to insist that respect can only be developed with truth.
No one is obligated to pursue these virtues. Those of you who have chosen the “easier” path have every “right” to do so. But when you stand with your group, that have no faith in these virtues. A group with no trust. A group with no respect for themselves or each other. A group without truth. Then you have resolved to accept the isolation, the ridicule, and the discontent, that accompanies that choice. Always prepare for the knife in your back.
When one of your “peers” inflicts a fatal wound to your soul, your happiness, or your life. Do NOT cry to those of us that have formed a group of individuals based on trust. Those of us that can respect themselves enough to be truthful to one another. You don’t deserve the protection that comes with dedication to these virtues. You don’t deserve the security that we possess. We have earned the warmth of faith that we have in one another.
And faith my friends is only for those with the courage, the fortitude, and the strength to believe in more than just themselves.
